Why is carob considered a “superfood”?

In addition to the features already discussed, we can list another special property of carob: it is a satiating food highly recommended in low-calorie diets for humans. Each 100 grams of carob absorbs about 250 calories and 23 grams of fiber. The moderate consumption acts with the activity of digestive enzymes; more specifically, it stimulates the sense of satiety and facilitates the intestinal regularity thanks to the considerable amount of dietary fiber.

Furthermore, carob fruit is gluten-free and can be consumed in a gluten-free diet. It is also ideal for high-end products for dogs.

The other well-known properties of carob

We can list further benefits of carob: it has been shown that the polyphenols (quercetin, gallic acid and delphinidin) have anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic properties.

The high fiber content is associated with a very low glycemic intake. The tannins in the pulp have a deep ‘cleaning’ action in the intestine against bacteria that attack intestinal cells. For this reason, they are considered a strong natural anti-diarrheal.

Carob saves the coasts and resists the arid climate

The carob is a rustic plant that does not have particular cultivation needs. It grows well in arid and poor soils, including very calcareous soils. Dry and hot climates are perfect for its growing. It can withstand up to 400 years and is able to produce fruit for the whole of its life. It also boasts an important feature for the environment: thanks to its deep roots, it is able to strengthen arid soils and contrast desertification. It can withstand drought, wind and brackish water making its tree ideal for strengthening coastal coasts from possible landslides. The large evergreen fronds can offer shelter to different species of birds and it can cool warm areas significantly.

A value curiosity

In nature the wooden pod of the carob holds seeds that are particularly hard, dark and round. They are called carats. In ancient times carat, the seed of the carob, was used as unit of measurement for gold, diamonds and precious stones. It is a name that has remained over time.
